Q+A with Chris Voss | Never Split the Difference

Former FBI negotiator Chris Voss tells a good story. From persuading hostage-takers to bank robbers to stand down is an art and, it turns out, a method we can all learn too.

Show tactical empathy by mirroring our opposition, use leading questions, let the silence hang, reassure, create an illusion of control and have a lot of patience. These are the tools that win negotiations.

We had a brilliant night at our London meetup playing ‘negotiation games’ and discovered quite a few strong performers and persuaders amongst us.

Chris kindly joined us for a Q&A from NYC which demonstrated his famous late-night DJ voice and why he believes we can all learn to become negotiators in our work and lives, and, crucially, never split the difference!

Our first meetup in Manchester + live negotiation games in London

We finally kicked off our long-awaited Rebel Book Club Manchester IRL meetups! Having started our Manchester hub in March 2020 just before lockdown, we’ve been waiting patiently for the right moment to get together.

The Rebel Book Club Manchester crew gathered at the wonderful Ducie Street Warehouse, our brand new home for our Autumn Season. We had a great time meeting each other outside of the little computer squares we’d got used to and we welcomed some lovely new members into the fold.

Over in London, Ben Keene was in town from rural Dorset playing the role of Negotiation hype man at Huckletree Shoreditch. Co-hosted by Anca + Nana from the RBC team, our members caught up on our pre-recorded Q+A with Chris Voss, before getting super brave and taking each other on in impromptu negotiation games live on stage!

Our London crew were powered by a super tasty El Rayo Tequila Cart + the refreshing fizz of Dash Water and hosted by our great friends over at Huckletree Shoreditch.

Introducing Literacy Pirates…

Each month we give our members the opportunity to donate the cost of a kindle book to a selected charity, usually associated with our theme. This month we supported Literacy Pirates and donated £125.

“We work with children aged 9-12 whose teachers think they would benefit from extra help. Our Young Pirates join us after-school, every week. We run sessions in fantastical spaces in Hackney, Haringey and digitally online.

We believe in the exceptional potential of every child and use the power of positivity and fun to unlock that potential.

Our learning programme is devised and led by qualified teachers. We want children to enjoy reading, so we give them dedicated time to read with trained volunteers. Alongside the chance to voice their ideas in creative writing activities. Then we publish their written work in high-quality books, films, and audio projects, and celebrate their hard work in big events with their teachers and family.”

Next up: Attached by Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel S.F. Heller

Our second book of the Autumn Season explores Modern Love. Rebel Book Clubbers voted for Attached by Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel S.F. Heller…

Discover how an understanding of adult attachment—the most advanced relationship science in existence today—can help us find and sustain love. Pioneered by psychologist John Bowlby in the 1950s, the field of attachment posits that each of us behaves in relationships in one of three distinct ways:

• Anxious people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partner’s ability to love them back
• Avoidant people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness.
• Secure people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving.

Attached guides readers in determining what attachment style they and their mate (or potential mate) follow, offering a road map for building stronger, more fulfilling connections with the people they love.

If you’ve already read Attached, you could dig into our other shortlisted books: Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan + Cacilda Jetha, or Three Women by Lisa Taddeo.

Our members’ meetups are on Tuesday 26th October @ 7pm (BST). Members will be joining in-person across the UK, or virtually around the world.

Thank you so much to all of our venue partners who keep our club connecting in curiosity:

That’s all for now. Sign up to become a member to join the fun!
