As well as resilience (April’s theme), empathy, creativity, resourcefulness, and optimism are often associated with successful modern entrepreneurship. It’s clear that this skillset is needed more than ever, by all of us.
Whether you run a business, freelance, or are having to be more ‘entrepreneurial’ at this time, you’ll enjoy hearing Rand Fishkin‘s candid story of how he built Moz and his rollercoaster startup ride. His book, Lost & Founder, is one of the more honest insider-accounts of the reality of running your own business in today’s world.

Which one resource would you recommend people check out to help them through this time?
As well as Rand, it was a real pleasure to host fellow members of Rebel Book Club: Ambica Jobanputra, Skye Robertson and Andy Fishburn. Pros, who are leading the small business response to the crisis with the organisations they work with: Virgin Startup, Escape the City and Entrepreneur First.

What did RBC members takeaway from the event?
To close, I asked RBC member Jules Barber to share three key takeaways from the audience’s perspective:
- The opportunity to share experiences and thoughts on the current situation with cool people who work in a similar environment.
- Rand was really interesting, had a lot to bring to the table and just a great energy and nice to get the first person narrative behind that.
- A Hop In one – nice timing and seamless movement between the various pieces of the event. The breakout rooms were cool, chat roulette was bonkers as you know, but actually I think there’s a lot to be said for it. We were talking about this at work the other day. You can increase the velocity and volume of your networking at an event like that, way beyond the time you have to expend at an in-person event. Plus the emotional energy you’d have to expend to introduce yourself and working out how you extricate yourself and all that kind of stuff...
Thanks again to everyone who took part in this event and joined our sessions to share their experiences and recommendations. It was a testament to the vibrant, innovative and supportive community we have here at Rebel Book Club!
